Editing/Revising

Instructional Strategies

  • Provide students with a rubric and ask them to self-assess.
  • Model formal vs. informal writing.
  • Have students experiment with shifts in tone or style.
  • Focusing on one/few rules at a time, have the student edit his/her own work using a checklist.
  • Use an acronym (e.g. C.O.P.S.) to structure the student’s editing.

Scaffolds

  • Grade/Hold accountable for only mastered subset of skills at a time.

Editing/Revising

Student will improve his ability to edit his final copy for correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation from 45% accuracy to 80% accuracy as measured by classroom-based permanent products by January 2020.

Teach the student the COPS strategy for editing. Provide the student with a checklist and hold him/her accountable for using it.
