Instructional Strategies

  • Model different types of presentation (direct quote vs. paraphrase; direct vs. indirect characterization).
  • Teach students to annotate as they read and then to use the annotations to support writing.
  • Have students rate the strength of their own or a peer’s use of evidence.
  • Teach students using Self-Regulated Strategy Development

Scaffolds

  • Provide models of well-constructed paragraphs.
  • Give students a checklist of necessary components for a paragraph/essay.

Paragraph Composition

Student will improve her ability to write a paragraph from a completed organizer from ⅕ times to ⅗ times as measured by classroom-based permanent products by December 2019.

With the student, select a paragraph organizer. Teach the student to complete the organizer. When independent, teach the student to transfer organizer to writing a paragraph. Fade the use of the organizer.
