Instructional Strategies

  • Work with a counselor or other professional to determine the antecedents and consequences of the behavior.
  • Assess skill gaps that may be contributing to behavior and address those gaps.
  • Reinforce the student for staying with the group for increasingly longer periods of time.
  • Engage the student in high-interest, meaningful activities.
  • Allow the student to make choices about how and where he/she will work.
  • Utilize a structured check in-check out (CICO) procedure (see link to google drive with resources at bottom of video)

Scaffolds

  • Give the student 1 “exit” card each period that can be used for a prescribed amount of time to leave the room.

Remaining with the instruction

Student will increase ability to stay in the classroom during independent work from ⅖ times to 5/5 times as determined by frequency count by December 2019.

Discuss with the student the reason for asking to leave the room. Create a contract with the student that outlines expectations and consequences for meeting/not meeting those expectations. For example: provide the student with one pass to leave the room each period that can only be used once the student has initiated the task and worked for 2 minutes or has requested help.
